In December 2011, the LoGOFF movement was birthed out of constant questions about how to practically respond to the injustices around us. As InterVarsity's New York City Urban Project (NYCUP) Director, our mission is to develop leaders with the character and capacity to change the world. We started off with well-attended focus groups, brainstorming sessions, and lots of talking that felt like action but had little impact. My efforts and thinking were mostly theoretical because I worked with college students and university communities who love to pontificate on all sorts of subjects, but taking personal, long term, sustainable, and sacrificial steps is usually out of the question. Confusion and inconvenience, I could say, were the biggest barriers for other people but ultimately they were my barriers as well. I had to acknowledge the places where I was at fault and involved in the very exploitation I wanted to halt. I was part of the problem and to not be an active part of the solution would take my hypocrisy to another level. So, if I was to live with integrity, I would have to change and work to transform the lives of those around me. To reiterate, this had to start with me. The world does not need another passionate, disconnected activist; we need people willing to move into the neighborhood and live transformed lives among those most marginalized. And that can be done anywhere.
In the beginning, LoGOFF focused on fighting sexual and labor exploitation, human trafficking and climate change and moving from consumption to stewardship. Now, it is the practical foundation for all of our work against homelessness, hunger, racism and other justice work. A consistent problem in combating exploitation that we have found over the past five years is that there isn't enough information or widespread practical actions that people can take after they've been informed. So, Good Journey is our effort to fill that much needed space with a mission to educate, compel and celebrate businesses and consumers who integrate stewardship into their everyday practices.
Our editorial will feature reviews of products, commentary on trends pertinent to conscious consumption, and personal testimonies of practical steps we can take in our lives to love our planet and its people well with our purchases. Additionally, our Good Journey members will receive items in the mail on a monthly basis containing products to replace things you use every day and to invest in freedom and not exploitation. For example, exchange your plastic water bottle for one of our steel ones. Or, we'll help you get good deals on that ethical t-shirt you’ve been eyeing. All these are available via subscription.
We were made to be stewards, not just consumers. So here is one practical way to do that. I sincerely hope that you will take this Good Journey with us and join a community committed to living differently and loving well.
